Immigration: (problem solution paper topic is yours to choose from instructions provided)

For the second assignment in class, you will write a problem/solution paper. We will use the unifying topic of immigration. This means you may pick any topic related to immigration. There are a multitude of topics related to immigration that touch on all areas of study. Some examples are:

• education: like the Dream Act; immigrant student needs in K-12; and so forth
• border issues: like the policies applied at the Canadian vs. Mexican borders; the environmental affects/results or security issues related to the wall; Indigenous/ Tribal issues in relation to the border and ports of entry security issues; and so forth
• medical care and access: like the changes in health care requirements and how that affects undocumented immigrants or mental healthcare access to refugees; the Health Care Act and qualifications; “Birth Tourism”; and so forth
• hiring practices and documentation: access to agricultural visas or penalties for companies that hire undocumented workers; economic influence of anti-immigrant laws; and so forth
• economic outcomes of laws: anti-immigrant laws and the influence on “Mom and Pop Stores” in immigrant communities; state un-employment rates after state immigration laws are passed; and so forth
• and a plethora of other topics: adoption; citizenship; driver’s licenses; and so forth

In this assignment, you will develop a lengthy, more thoroughly-researched and explicitly-elaborated argument that identifies a specific problem, analyzes its causes and effects, and proposes a feasible solution (or solutions). Again, the problem will be related to immigration. You will need to clearly identify the problem, providing evidence to support your claim that the problem is, in fact, a problem and analyzing the causes and effects of the problem. Then, you will propose a feasible solution to the problem. The key word here is feasible. If the solution is too expensive, takes too much time and/or effort to implement, or is unlikely to be implemented for some other reason (such as logistics, ethics, etc.) then it is not feasible.

Another challenge with this assignment is that, depending on the problem you propose to solve, you might need specific unique sources to support your solution to the problem, and you might not be able to gain access to those sources (e.g., if they are proprietary, confidential, or require a “Freedom of Information Act” request). Therefore, in selecting a problem to solve, consider the availability and accessibility of relevant source information that you will need, not only to prove that a problem exists but also that your solution is feasible. If you need help finding sources check with your instructor; your instructor may also direct you to one of CMU’s research librarians.
Note: The topic of immigration will be used for the next paper (argumentation) as well; be aware of this as you are selecting and researching topics. Your paper topics and up to four (4)of your sources may overlap between the two papers.

After you have started to think of different potential topics, it is important to make sure you understand what a problem/solution paper is. Here are the required readings to help you understand the genre.

Likewise, you will read and use the information in Chapter 12 in Faigley–listed on the board as homework–along with reading this assignment sheet and the links provided on it.

Sources: Use a minimum of eight (8) sources in your proposal to provide background to the problem (including its causes and effects) and to support your proposed solution. Your sources must be highly credible and relevant, so you must be selective in your research. Keep in mind that some problems and solutions might require empirical data for support, not just someone else’s informed opinion. However, given the limitations for human subjects research imposed by law on students and faculty by CMU’s Institutional Review Board, any data used in your proposal must be gathered by some other source (e.g. the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, The World Health Organization, etc.) and may not include data that you have obtained directly (i.e., you may not conduct any interviews, surveys, observations, etc.). Your instructor will expect you to upload with your assignment copies of all your print sources and URLs for all web sources in a works cited (and have proper citation in the paper).

Visuals: Include any appropriate visuals that will enhance the effectiveness of your report. Use of visuals in this assignment is required, and visuals may not count toward the page length for the assignment; it will depend on what kinds of visuals you include and whether you created the visuals yourself or borrowed them. All borrowed visuals must be cited and will not count toward your page length. Do not include gratuitous visuals, such as clip art; include only visuals that readers will find useful in understanding the problem and accepting your solution. (See the second section of the Faigley textbook or the OWL links on how to incorporate visuals into the paper.)

Audience and purpose: Give your proposal a title that will be effective and appropriate for the intended audience and purpose. Select a specific audience and purpose for your report, and write this at the top of your paper so your peer reviewers and instructor will know (see the student examples).
