History of Latin America

Introduction
History of Latin America is characterized by increased tension in the late colonial period. These tensions have been accumulating for many years and were escalated by the increasing demands by the Spanish Crown. This is a book written by Julie Charplin in 2011, which provides an analysis of the history of Latin America. The book provides a great political and historical writing of the Latin America. It is recognized universally as one of the most significant books of Latin American history. Chaplain analyzes the Latin American history from the period when European settled in Latin America to formation of a new empire.
 
Chaplain focuses on Tupac Amaru, an Indian from royal family who led the natives in Latin America to destroy Europeans in the region and save people from oppression and tyranny of Europeans. Chaplain describes the injustices of the Spanish government on the indigenous population through imposing high taxation and tyranny of callous. Chaplain explains Tupac limits to the intolerable oppression on the people by government officials. Tupac addresses the people on the need to unite and provides an example of an activist in the province of Tinta who died in a public scuffle because of his courage and boldness in trying to save the people from European rule. Chaplain describes how Tupac urges people to live together as brothers and unite to fight against Europeans. The aim of Tupac was to provide the natives with freedom from taxation, forced labor, tributes and house custom duty (Charlip 26).
Chaplin describes extreme actions that Tupac Amaru undertook to destroy Europeans. For instance, Tupac was executed after being arrested by the Spanish authorities for refusing to confess to the civil authorities of his secret plans to fight Europeans and liberate the poor from the pain inflicted on them. Despite all the severe torture and killing of his family, Tupac did not confess to the authority and this showed his courage and boldness. Even though people launched numerous complaints in courts about the oppression of the Europeans, the courts did not offer them any help because they were run by Spanish magistrates (Charlip 28).
Chaplin outlines the cruelty of the Spanish officials by describing how Tupac body was treated after execution. The court ordered for his body to be dismantled by cutting off the tongue, tying the arms and feet on strong cords on horses so that when these horse go in opposite direction, the body will be ripped apart and head sent to Tinta province (Charlip 30). Chaplin explains that Tupac was sold out to the Spanish government by his close ally and a friend, Corregidor Arriaga (Charlip 29).
The author as well describes the people of the Spanish Indies and the events that took place in the sixteenth century. The government officials wanted Indians to interact with Christians on the Island and form close relations so that others can be converted into Holy Catholic Faith and work together to provide required labor (Charlip 17). During this era, many people including Bartolome Garcia and Dona Isabel de Guevara among others complained to the Highness about being treated badly and yet they have served in the government for a long time. The government was giving foreigners priority over its own people who fought for the country (Charlip 19).
The author has integrated her unique understanding of the various historical events that took place during colonial periods of Spanish rule in the region. The author has effectively matched the old themes of politics, cultural, history and family enriching the Latin America literature thus generating new experiences to readers. Chaplin clearly describes the events that shaped Latin America region. The author has demonstrated keenness from the intimate knowledge of the political situations in the Spanish government in Latin America and how they oppressed the natives. The analysis of these events has significantly influenced the politics in the region.
The writings of Chaplin provide critical insights into the historical events of Latin America. These insights provided people with recognition of his intimate, evocative and sympathetic style of writing the Latin America affairs. Chaplins writing styles are depicted clearly where he describes the execution of Tupac and what happened to his body.
